Periodontal Disease

Unlike most diseases that give patients some type of warning, gum disease progresses silently and often without pain or other symptoms.  It may develop slowly or it can come on quickly.  It is estimated that about 75% of the population has some form of periodontal disease, but the majority of those do not realize it.

Gum disease begins in between the teeth.  Regular toothbrushes cannot reach these areas.  Most people don't or cannot floss effectively.  Gingivitis is a bacterial infection of the gums that is reversible.  Periodontal disease is gum and bone disease.  It destroys the gum surrounding your teeth and also the bone that supports your teeth.  Once the infection has spread from the gum tissue into the bone, permanent damage occurs.  There are several stages of this disease.  If detected early, the disease can be controlled.

Periodontal  disease can increase the risk  of a variety of health concerns.  It may cause a weakened immune system,  issues with diabetes, stroke, lung disease, preterm or low birth babies, respiratory disease, osteoporosis, gastric ulcers and heart disease.

This disease can be disfiguring.  Your gums can swell  and become red and inflamed.  They may even bleed.  Your teeth can shift and dark spaces between your teeth may start showing.  The teeth become loose and may need to be extracted. If the bone loss is severe, then the replacement of those extracted teeth can be problematic.  The ADA has notated early warning signs of periodontal disease.  These include:

1.  Gums that bleed when you brush your teeth.

2.  Gums that are red, swollen or tender.

3.  Gums that are pulled away from teeth.

4.  Pus between teeth that are loose or separating.

5.  Permanent teeth that are loose or separating.

6.  Change in the way your teeth fit together when biting.

7.  Any changes in fit of partial dentures.

8.  Persistent bad breath.

Early detection will provide you with the best treatment .  At Care Dental Spa our staff are trained and licensed to detect gum disease.  The results of the exam will determine what type of treatment is best for you.  Please note that a routine cleaning (polishing the teeth above your gumline) is NOT enough to treat periodontal disease.  The hygienist and Dr. Luong will determine what treatment is best for you based on pocket depths, bone loss, bleeding and loss of attachment.
