Prophylaxis

A dental prophylaxis or teeth cleaning is a procedure that is normally done by our hygienist. The hygienist will thoroughly clean your teeth and this is a preventative measure to stop the progression of periodontal disease and/or gingivitis. Normally most patients come every six months for their prophylaxis; however, some come more often due to periodontal issues, medical conditions (diabetes or autoimmune conditions) or the buildup of plaque occurs quicker than the norm.

Once our patient is seated, our hygienist will go over their medical history. Certain medications can cause a dry mouth, which can affect your oral hygiene. Medical conditions and medications can also affect your oral health. Then a quick physical and visual exam of your mouth and neck is done to screen for oral cancer and anything that is evident.

Radiographs are taken to assist in finding any oral problems that are not visible to the naked eye, such as decay or abscesses under the gumline. Perio probing is also done. This is done by measuring the depth of your gum tissue by using an instrument called a periodontal probe. Healthy gums should fit tightly around your teeth. Poor oral hygiene, age and certain medical conditions can make the tissue pull away from teeth. This creates pockets around teeth where food particles and bacteria can collect, causing bleeding, deeper pocketing, pain and bone loss.

The hygienist will perform your dental cleaning using special instruments to remove plaque and tartar from your teeth and below your gum line. Afterwards, your teeth are polished to remove stains caused by food and beverages. Then your teeth are flossed to clean in between your teeth.

Our dental hygienist is a great source for any questions and/or concerns that you have. They can educate our patients with recommendations for better dental care and also demonstrate proper techniques. If you have any questions, please ask. They love patients that have questions or want to learn more about their dental care.

Dr. Luong will then do your comprehensive oral examination. He will visually look at your teeth, mouth, gums and neck area and look at any radiographs that were taken. At this time he will diagnose any treatment that is necessary.
