Dental Bridges

A dental bridge is used to replace a missing tooth or teeth.  The bridge is used to fill in the gap where the missing tooth or teeth are.  It helps to restore your bite, oral health and your smile.  The dental bridge is composed of two- three components.  The false tooth or teeth are called a pontic.  The pontic  takes the place of your missing tooth or teeth..  The pontic is held in place by the abutment teeth on either side of the pontic.  Your natural abutment teeth are  prepped in order to support the pontic.  This process is similar to the preparation of a natural tooth to support a full coverage crown.

The actual prep time for a bridge usually takes 90 minutes to two hours.  The exception would be if endodontic treatment is required.  Then it would take longer.  After the proper consent forms are completed, numbing gel is placed around the teeth that are needing the bridge.  Once that takes effect, Dr. Luong will use lidocaine to numb that area. It's not uncommon for the assistant to take an X-Ray and take an impression to make the temporary bridge.  Once that is done, Dr. Luong will remove any decay if present and shape the remaining tooth structure to support the bridge.  Once that is done the assistant will either take more impressions or use a digital scanner  to send the images directly to the lab for fabrication.  Then a temporary bridge will be temporarily cemented.  Please note, this is a temporary bridge.  It will not look or feel like your permanent bridge.  Instructions  are then explained, such as don't eat anything chewy like gum or caramel and directions are provided on how to floss around your temporary bridge.

The office staff will notify you when your bridge has been delivered to the office.  An appointment will be scheduled to deliver your bridge.  This appointment normally takes about one hour.
