Scaling and Root Planing

Scaling and root planing is a process used to prevent the spreading of  and a source of treatment for periodontal disease.  Gum disease is caused by plaque which is a sticky film of bacteria that is constantly forming on your teeth.  If the plaque isn't removed, it can become tartar which is much harder.  If the plaque or tartar are not removed, your gums become inflamed which causes the gums to pull away from your tooth structure.  These spaces in between your tooth and your gums are called pockets.  Once these pockets form, plaque and tartar can get into the pockets and cannot be removed by regular toothbrushing.  Now the bacteria is below your gum line and can attack the bone that holds your teeth in place.  It can cause bone loss,  loose teeth, and even the loss of teeth. If the pockets between your teeth and gum line are too deep you will need to have "Scaling and Root Planing."  This type of cleaning involves two parts.  Sc...

Periodontal Disease

Unlike most diseases that give patients some type of warning, gum disease progresses silently and often without pain or other symptoms.  It may develop slowly or it can come on quickly.  It is estimated that about 75% of the population has some form of periodontal disease, but the majority of those do not realize it.   Gum disease begins in between the teeth.  Regular toothbrushes cannot reach these areas.  Most people don't or cannot floss effectively.  Gingivitis is a bacterial infection of the gums that is reversible.  Periodontal disease is gum and bone disease.  It destroys the gum surrounding your teeth and also the bone that supports your teeth.  Once the infection has spread from the gum tissue into the bone, permanent damage occurs.  There are several stages of this disease.  If detected early, the disease can be controlled. Periodontal  disease can increase the risk  of a variety of health conce...

Dental Implants

Image
Dental implants are medical devices that are surgically implanted into your jaw bone.  It looks somewhat like a screw with tiny holes throughout the implant.  Your bone will then grow into those holes to stabilize the implant.  Once that is done, the abutment and crown can be fabricated and placed on that implant.  You now have a "crown" that can be utilized for chewing and to enhance your appearance.  Implants can also be used to support bridges, partials and dentures.   The dental implant system has three parts.  The dental implant body is the "screw-like" component that is surgically inserted into your bone.  This takes the place of your tooth's root.  The dental abutment is then placed to the implant body and this is what holds the crown to the implant body.   Not everyone is an implant candidate.  Your dental provider will do an exam with radiographs to make suer that you have enough bone level to support the imp...

Dental Bridges

Image
A dental bridge is used to replace a missing tooth or teeth.  The bridge is used to fill in the gap where the missing tooth or teeth are.  It helps to restore your bite, oral health and your smile.  The dental bridge is composed of two- three components.  The false tooth or teeth are called a pontic.  The pontic  takes the place of your missing tooth or teeth..  The pontic is held in place by the abutment teeth on either side of the pontic.  Your natural abutment teeth are  prepped in order to support the pontic.  This process is similar to the preparation of a natural tooth to support a full coverage crown. The actual prep time for a bridge usually takes 90 minutes to two hours.  The exception would be if endodontic treatment is required.  Then it would take longer.  After the proper consent forms are completed, numbing gel is placed around the teeth that are needing the bridge.  Once that takes effect, Dr....
